چکیده

We prove that if an object O is convex and fat then, for any two points a and b on its boundary, there exists a path on O’s boundary, from a to b, whose length is bounded by the length of the line segment ab times some constant β. This constant is a function of the dimension d and the fatness parameter. We prove bounds for β, and show how to efficiently find paths on the boundary of O whose lengths are within these bounds. As an application of this result, we briefly consider the problem of efficiently computing short paths in R in the presence of disjoint convex fat obstacles.

Mobile Robot Collision Avoidance in Human Environments

Collision avoidance is a fundamental requirement for mobile robots. Avoiding moving obstacles (also termed dynamic obstacles) with unpredictable direction changes, such as humans, is more challenging than avoiding moving obstacles whose motion can be predicted. Precise information on the future moving directions of humans is unobtainable for use in navigation algo...

Does treadmill walking with near-infrared light applied to the abdominal area reduce local adiposity and body weight?

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the effect on local fat deposition and body weight of wearing a near-infrared light belt around the abdomen. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-eight obese female subjects participated in this experiment. For measurement of body composition, an impedance-style body fat analyzer was used. The experimental group performed treadmill walking 3 times p...

Synaptic plasticity in a recurrent neural network for versatile and adaptive behaviors of a walking robot

Walking animals, like insects, with little neural computing can effectively perform complex behaviors. For example, they can walk around their environment, escape from corners/deadlocks, and avoid or climb over obstacles. While performing all these behaviors, they can also adapt their movements to deal with an unknown situation. As a consequence, they successfully navigate through their complex...

The role of binocular vision in walking.

Despite the extensive investigation of binocular and stereoscopic vision, relatively little is known about its importance in natural visually guided behavior. In this paper, we explored the role of binocular vision when walking over and around obstacles. We monitored eye position during the task as an indicator of the difference between monocular and binocular performances. We found that binocu...

The navigation of mobile robots in non-stationary and non-structured environments

The paper presents the navigation of mobile walking robot systems for movement in non-stationary and non-structured environments. In the first approach are presented main elements for the successful completion of intelligent navigation. The wireless sensor networks (WSN), dynamical stability control, strategies for dynamical control and a Bayesian approach of simultaneous localisation and mappi...
